Why You Should Add a Guest Book to your Wedding Checklist
When planning your wedding, there's so many little (and big) details to remember, so considering why you should add a guest book to your wedding checklist might sound like a stretch at first. I remember when planning my wedding, it never occurred to me to add it to my list of things to do. But wedding guest books are such an important detail.
In fact, I would list them second to finding a great photographer because like your wedding day photography, the guest book helps tell the story of your day. It's one of the few things you have left after all the food has been eaten, the flowers have died, and the dress has been put into storage.
Your wedding guest book doesn't just HAVE to be a long list of guest names unless you want it to be. If you want your guest book to have fun photos of your guests, sweet meaningful messages, or goofy madlibs from your most loved friends and family, then keep reading to learn how to pencil in 'guest book' in between all the other super important things on your wedding checklist
If you want something custom to your needs (like a photo booth album) or personalized, you're going to need to order your guest book in advance. The chances of you finding the guest book in the colors you want with your name or initials and wedding date on it are pretty much non existent if you wait till the week before the wedding to start looking.
We recommend ordering your wedding guest book 1-2 months before your wedding day.
2. Your guest book table will need some sort of decoration and accompanying accessories
Whether your guest book will have a table of its own, or share the spotlight with the escort cards or photo booth props, there's items you'll need to accompany the guest book, such as a 'sign our guest book' sign, pens, and maybe message cards if you want guests writing advice or filling out madlibs.
Having the guest book (along with the decorative details accompanying it) on your checklist will insure that you have plenty of time to prepare and coordinate before the wedding.
3. You may be working with a graphic designer on your stationery details
You may have a graphic designer customize a logo for your wedding. If you want that custom design on your guest book, you'll need a metal die made, which could tack on more time.
You'll definitely want to add 'guest book' to your wedding planning checklist, but add it to your photo checklist for your photographer as well. If you have a photo booth, it may be fun having photographs of your guests writing fun messages on the photos or in the guest book next to their picture.
For a really great wedding checklist (with a photography checklist and other vendor checklists), check out Martha Stewart's Wedding Handbook. It's free to download and print, and already has guest book listed on the 1-2- months out list, on the budgeting list, and on the photography shot list.

4. You don't want to order your guest book too early.
When I was planning my wedding, I changed color palettes twice. If you order a guest book (and other custom wedding details) too early, you may regret your decisions. Colors, themes, and style may change as you learn more about what you need for your wedding and what you want. You should at least wait until you've picked out your venues so you can have wedding details compliment the setting.
5. Guest Books aren't just for signingYou'll definitely want to add 'guest book' to your wedding planning checklist, but add it to your photo checklist for your photographer as well.
