We love the idea of starting new Thanksgiving traditions. One great way to do this is by putting out a guest book for family members to fill in on Thanksgiving.
When my husband and I got married and moved to Atlanta, we didn’t know a soul. It was just the two of us, and between grad school and working, it was hard to travel back home for the holidays. Being far away from family can easily get you down around the holidays, but focusing on who you’re with and how you can make your own traditions has a great way of making the best out of your situation.
One of our traditions has turned into hosting some of my husband’s single friends from his graduate program. Some of them are from different countries, and are eager to experience an American tradition, but a lot of them are also Americans who can’t make it home for Thanksgiving since the break is too short to travel long distances.
Typically, they end up spending the holiday completely alone.
So, for one day a year, my little home is filled with hungry, homesick boys who desperately try to offer me conversation other than math and science and homework in exchange for the roasted turkey and pumpkin pie from my oven.
I always try to get a photograph of this hodgepodge gathering of students, but I think having a guest book in my home for these moments would really help preserve the memories of visitors gathered around my table.
I love the idea of having a book filled with treasured Fall recipes (old and new), photos of the table settings, and notes from my guests about what they’re most grateful for in life, along with their photo. We made the place card available in horizontal or vertical position. Just fold on the light gray dotted line, cut out the leaf tip at the top, and fold! We recommend using an exacto knife for precision.
